A COIN-HUNTER has found a $19,000 hoard of coins buried in a field after years of searching.

Experts say they discovered the "secret" to finding these types of rarities again.

An anonymous metal detectorist found a treasure of coins worth $19,000 while searching through a field in Norfolk, England in 2020.

The hobbyist found a total of 430 coins from the Roman era, dating as far back as 5BC.

73 of the most valuable ones were auctioned in London earlier this month, selling for £15,000 (around $19,000).

Among the finds was an extremely rare coin given to warriors, depicting a phoenix on a globe, and this one sold for the equivalent of $3,400.

While the person who found the coins has not made themselves known, a coin expert thinks they discovered the "secret" to uncovering such valuable treasures.

Coin specialist Nigel Mills, from Noonans auctioneers, told the BBC: "Some of the people I've spoken to recently, who have found some amazing finds, are spending a lot of time detecting - hours and hours - and they don't give up.

"They keep going and that's the secret in so many things - don't give up, keep looking."

Under UK law, all artifacts that might be considered treasures must be reported to the authorities.

But no museum or landowner could lay claim to the coins, so the metal detectorist was allowed to keep the cash from auction.

MORE TREASURE FINDS

While England has a long history of civilizations that used coins going back thousands of years, historic treasures can also be found in the US.

One Florida teen discovered that for himself when snorkeling off the coast of Vero Beach in 2021.

Nick Amelio was salvaging near Corrigan's shipwreck when he came across the 1715 Spanish Treasure Fleet - 11 ships that were lost in a hurricane off the Florida coast.

As Amelio revealed in a TikTok video, he saw what seemed to just be a gold flake at first.

“We started to find a trail of gold left from the shipwreck that sank over 300 years ago,” he said.

“The day took an unexpected turn when I found an amazing gold coin."

He showed off a shiny Mexico City gold 2 escudo, worth around $10,000.

But you don't need to come across a historic hoard to become rich off coin-collecting.

Modern, seemingly ordinary coins can be worth a pretty penny too.
